Most "craps strategy" online sells systems. Here's the honest version: no betting pattern beats craps — but a disciplined player can cut the house edge to a fraction of a percent purely by which bets they make. That's the entire skill. Everything else is noise.
1 · The smart-bet core
The entire optimal beginner game, in five linesThis is it. There is nothing more to "advanced" craps that lowers your edge:
• Bet the Pass Line (or Don't Pass) — 1.41% / 1.36%.
• Always take maximum free odds behind it — 0% edge. This is non-negotiable.
• Optionally add one or two Come bets with odds — same 1.41%, blends to ~0.37%.
• If you want more numbers, Place only the 6 and 8 — 1.52%.
• Never bet the center of the table — Field / hardways / Any 7 are 2.78–16.7%.
Played this way, your blended house edge sits well under 1% — about as low as a craps player can realistically get. That's the whole strategy.
2 · Why it works (the math)
Dilution, not magicThe core works for one reason: the free odds bet is 0%, and stacking a 0% bet next to a 1.41% bet drags the average down. The more odds you take, the lower your blended edge:

3 · Bankroll & session sense
It doesn't change the edge — it changes how long you lastBankroll discipline is real, but be precise about what it does: it does not lower the house edge. It controls variance — how long you play and how wild the swings feel. Sensible defaults:
- Size odds to your bankroll, not your ego. A small line bet with full odds beats a big line bet with none — more 0% money, less 1.41% money.
- Set a loss limit and a walk-away point before you start. The negative expectation is constant; the only thing you control after that is when you stop.
- Treat it as paid entertainment, not income. Over enough rolls the edge always wins; the skill is minimizing what it wins.
4 · The myths to ignore
Where "strategy" content goes wrongBetting systems (Martingale, Paroli, "regression"). Doubling after losses or pressing after wins only reshapes the distribution of outcomes — many small wins and rare catastrophic losses, or vice versa. The expected value is unchanged. No order or sizing of negative-EV bets is positive-EV. Ever.
Dice control / dice setting. No credible, repeatable evidence shows it produces a measurable edge under real casino conditions. Treat the dice as random.
"Due" numbers / the gambler's fallacy. Dice have no memory. A number being "cold" or a shooter being "hot" tells you nothing about the next roll. The 36-combination grid is fixed and stateless.
"Hedging" with prop bets. Covering a Pass Line bet with Any Craps or Any 7 just adds a 11–17% bet to a 1.41% one. It feels safe and quietly raises your blended edge.
5 · The edge is the knowledge
The only honest takeawayYou cannot control the dice. Every roll is pure chance. So where is the skill? It's the bet you choose — the difference between giving the house 16.7% (Any 7) and 0% (free odds) on the exact same dice. It's not a system, it's the opposite of one: clearly seeing which bets are structurally smart and which are tourist traps — the way a DFS player reads a slate or a poker player reads pot odds.
